After all, the summer sun can be very harsh, and many of us spend more time outside during the summer having fun, working in the yard, or just relaxing. You can depend on Specialists in Plastic Surgery for help taking care of your skin, but make sure you take steps to protect your skin as well.

  • The sun can damage skin within minutes. Avoid going out into the direct sun in the middle of the day, when the sun is at its strongest. Stay inside from 10 am to 4 pm if you can, and if you do go outside protect yourself with a long sleeve shirt, pants, and a hat with a wide brim. And don’t forget your eyes! Use sunglasses that provide UV protection.
  • An important part of protecting skin is sunscreen. Make sure you apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, even when it looks like the sun is hidden behind clouds. If you do end up staying outside for a long time, make sure you reapply sunscreen often.
  • If you decide to sunbathe, limit your time outside to no more than 20 minutes at a time. A little bit of sun can go a long way!
  • If you have had sunburns in the past, even decades ago, your risk of skin cancer is increased. If you’ve had five or more bad sunburns throughout your life, your risk of melanoma is doubled. Melanoma is the most serious kind of skin cancer, but when it is detected early there is a very high survival rate. Be on the lookout for any spots or moles that look suspicious, and see your doctor right away if you think something doesn’t look right.
