BOTOX, XEOMIN, DYSPORT: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

Chances are that if you’ve searched ways to treat facial lines and wrinkles, you have come across a lot of different options. While dermal fillers (such as Juvederm, Restylane, or Radiesse) are typically the initial approach for adding volume and contour, wrinkles that are caused from muscle contraction with facial movement are best treated with neurotoxins (or neuromodulators).

Neurotoxins have been one of the most popular non-surgical treatments in the US for years, and the options currently on the market in the US include Botox, Dysport, Xeomin and Daxxify. They all function in the same way, by temporarily blocking the neurotransmitter that signals the muscle in that area to contract. By relaxing the muscle, there is improvement in the appearance of the lines and wrinkles by allowing the skin to smooth in that area.

While all four neurotoxins work in the same way, there are some differences between them that are helpful to know. The number of units used in treating an area will be the same for Botox, Xeomin or Daxxify, while Dysport requires (2-3x) more units per area. Generally, patients will begin to see onset of effects slightly sooner with Dysport and Daxxify (1-2 days) compared to Botox, or Xeomin (3-4 days), but full results for all of the products occur in the same timeframe (1-2 weeks). Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin have approximately the same duration of effect, which is typically 3-4 months (sometimes up to 6 months) while Daxxify provides effects of 6 months depending on the treatment provided.

A key difference between the three options is the additives in each product. Botox and Dysport both have complexing or accessory proteins in addition to the active ingredient (botulinum toxin), while Xeomin has no additives. Daxxify has a particular peptide to extend the toxin’s effects. In comparison to Botox, Xeomin and Daxxify the composition of Dysport can also increase the likelihood of diffusion or spread of its effects- this is also very dependent on preparation of the product and can be desirable in certain circumstances, but in general, Botox, Xeomin and Daxxify tend to have a more precise effect.
