BOTOX® Cosmetic in Raleigh, NC
One of the earliest and most common signs of aging is the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on your face. Even though they may all look the same, there are actually two types of wrinkles on your face: static and dynamic. BOTOX® Cosmetic addresses dynamic (active) wrinkles.
Dynamic wrinkles are caused by long-term repetitive use of the muscles in your face. When you frown or concentrate, the muscles between your brows contract, causing your brow to furrow. When you squint, the muscles around your eyes contract, eventually causing crow’s feet. You use these muscles all day, every day. As the collagen and elastin in your skin decrease, these wrinkles etch themselves deeper into your face.
At Specialists in Plastic Surgery, we offer BOTOX® Cosmetic injections designed to smooth wrinkles and reduce the signs of aging on your face.

How Are BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatments Performed?
Each BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment takes place right in our office. Our injector uses a thin needle to inject BOTOX® Cosmetic into the facial muscles just below the skin’s surface. You may experience mild discomfort, and we offer numbing cream for more sensitive areas if necessary.
The treatment typically takes 15 to 30 minutes from start to finish and can be combined with other noninvasive options, such as dermal fillers, to enhance your results further.
How Long Is My Recovery After a BOTOX® Cosmetic Injection?
BOTOX® Cosmetic injections require zero downtime after treatment, allowing you to immediately return to your normal activities, though you should avoid any strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours. You may experience mild swelling or bruising around the injection site, but these are temporary issues that quickly resolve on their own.
Are There Any Risks With BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic has been FDA-approved for over 20 years, and the company that manufactures it continues to adhere to rigorous quality and safety requirements. However, as with any product, there are some side effects.
You may have swelling, bruising, redness, or itching at the injection site, but these effects are generally mild and short-lived. Rare but more serious side effects include allergic reactions, flu-like symptoms, headache, fatigue, or drooping eyelids. We address these potential side effects at your consultation so you’re aware of them beforehand.
What Can I Expect After My BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is formulated using botulinum toxin type A, a neurotoxin. Neurotoxins target the nervous system, and when small doses are injected into the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles, they block the signaling process between the neurons that activate the muscles responsible for your dynamic expressions. By preventing these muscle contractions, the visibility of the active lines and wrinkles on your face is greatly diminished.
How Long Will My Results Last?
BOTOX® Cosmetic often takes effect within four or five days, and results last three or four months. Regular injections are necessary to maintain your results, and if you are consistent with your treatments, you will not only see a reduction in the existing lines on your face, but you will notice that fewer new lines are forming. This is because regular injections of BOTOX® Cosmetic can “train” the affected muscles to stay relaxed, keeping ALL dynamic wrinkles at bay. Contrary to myths about how BOTOX® Cosmetic “freezes” your face, there is no need to worry — you will still be able to smile and frown as desired, but creases and wrinkles will appear much softer and less noticeable.
