Xeomin® & Dysport®

Have fine lines and wrinkles caused by repeated muscle movements? Discover a natural, more youthful version of yourself with injectable neuromodulators!

A neuromodulator (or “wrinkle relaxer”) is an injectable medication that softens the skin by relaxing targeted facial muscles. While BOTOX® Cosmetic is undoubtedly the most well-known of these injectables, it isn’t the only one. Raleigh’s Specialists in Plastic Surgery is pleased to offer three types of neuromodulators: BOTOX® Cosmetic, XEOMIN®, and Dysport®.

Why Should I Choose Specialists in Plastic Surgery for My Neurotoxin Treatment?

Injecting a neuromodulator requires a certain skill set to achieve a natural-looking result.

Our skilled injector Amanda Olsen, PA-C, has extensive training and experience in administering injections safely and effectively and will customize a treatment protocol that fits your needs. This approach ensures a more youthful and refreshed version of yourself.

Although these neuromodulators have many similarities, they are not identical and spread differently beneath the skin. Knowing the right product and amount necessary for the treatment area is crucial for a natural-looking result. This is why choosing an injector who is skilled and experienced with all three of these toxins is so important.

Is a Neurotoxin Right for Me?

Neuromodulators are ideal for healthy adults (18 to 65 years old) with concerns about facial lines and wrinkles. Neuromodulators can also treat migraine headaches, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, and excessive sweating.

While many patients wait to undergo these treatments after they have already begun to notice lines and wrinkles, some choose to undergo these injections as a preventative treatment. If you notice that your skin no longer snaps back the way it used to, you may benefit from using consistent neuromodulator treatments.

Patients with an egg or lactose protein allergy should avoid Dysport®, as the product contains the allergen protein.

How Long Is Recovery After an Injectable Treatment?

There’s no downtime after a neuromodulator treatment, and you can return to normal activities immediately. But, you may experience slight bruising or swelling at the site of injection. You should avoid strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours.

Are There Any Risks With Injectable Treatments?

Neuromodulators have been studied extensively for many years and are very safe. There are possible side effects such as bruising, swelling, redness, or itching at the injection site. It is also possible to have an allergic reaction, fatigue, headache, flu-like symptoms, or eyelid droop. All these potential side effects are discussed in-depth during your visit.

How Long Will My Neuromodulator Results Last?

Neuromodulators generally last three to four months before needing another injection; however, your metabolism and treatment dosage may change this approximation.

What Are My Neuromodulator Options?

BOTOX® Cosmetic

BOTOX® Cosmetic has been the most popular cosmetic procedure in the United States for the last several years. Since FDA approved for cosmetic use in 2002, BOTOX® Cosmetic has proven to be an effective treatment for frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines.

BOTOX® Cosmetic contains additive proteins around the toxin that are designed to clump together, thus helping the effects to last longer.

When injected into the desired muscle, BOTOX® Cosmetic spreads to about the size of a penny. This amount of dispersion is less than Dysport®but more than XEOMIN®.

XEOMIN®

XEOMIN® is an FDA-approved and clinically proven treatment for smoothing frown lines. XEOMIN® contains no additive proteins, making it spread less than the other products. When injected, XEOMIN® tends to only spread about a dime size. This thicker consistency makes it ideal for small areas like frown lines.

Because there are no additive proteins, there is less chance of an allergic reaction.

Dysport®

Dysport® is an FDA-approved option to soften and smooth frown lines between the brows for up to five months. Like BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport® contains complexing proteins around the toxin that help it last longer; however, it has a thinner consistency than BOTOX® Cosmetic, causing it to spread the most when injected. Dysport® can spread to about the size of a quarter beneath the skin. Because of this, you will need more units to treat the injected area.

How Are BOTOX® Cosmetic, XEOMIN®, and Dysport® Treatments Performed?

Treatment with neuromodulators involves a few simple injections. Numbing cream is rarely necessary but may improve comfort in sensitive areas. We use a thin needle to inject the contracting facial muscles below the surface of the skin.

Muscles treated with neuromodulators will relax but not inhibit natural facial expressions. The treatment takes 15 to 30 minutes. Neuromodulator treatments are often combined with other non-surgical treatments, such as dermal fillers.

After Your Neuromodulator Treatment

Once injected, neuromodulators block nerve impulses to help relax the treated muscles. As a result, you will look younger and have a more rejuvenated facial expression.

While every patient is different, XEOMIN® patients often notice their results within two days, Dysport® patients within two to three days, and BOTOX® Cosmetic patients within four to five days.

Some patients take longer, not seeing their full effects for one week or more. Our patients usually return after two weeks so we can ensure that they have achieved the results they wanted.

Ready for a Surgical Procedure?

If you are noticing that your aging concerns are no longer being remedied with a neuromodulator, you may want to consider a more permanent surgical procedure like a brow lift or a facelift. These procedures tighten the skin and underlying tissues to allow for a significant lift.
