What is Male Breast Reduction and Am I a Good Candidate?

Handsome mature man smilingWhen you think about breast augmentation, you usually picture a woman who needs correction after breastfeeding or wants to cosmetically change what she naturally has. It’s safe to assume that you don’t usually picture a man needing breast corrective surgery.

However, men can benefit just as much as women at Specialists in Plastic Surgery. Gynecomastia correction, or male breast reduction, is becoming increasingly common amongst men in the Raleigh area. This procedure can help men with overdeveloped or enlarged breasts by removing excess fat issue.

What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is caused by the imbalance of the hormones estrogen and testosterone, and can affect both breasts, oftentimes unevenly. Although a benign condition, Gynecomastia can lower self-confidence, and can sometimes make men’s breasts painful.

Several things can create this hormone imbalance, like certain medications, excess drug and alcohol levels, health conditions like Hypogonadism, Hyperthyroidism, and kidney failure as well as natural hormone changes. In fact, more than half of male infants are born with Gynecomastia but it usually goes away within two to three weeks after birth.  It may re-appear during puberty, and may last six months to two years without treatment. One in four men will see it peak again between the ages of 50 and 69.

How Can Male Breast Reduction Help?

Gynecomastia may go away over time, but if it persists, surgery might be an option. It’s an outpatient procedure that can be performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. There are a few methods for this procedure – liposuction, surgical removal of the tissue (excision), or a combination of both. The type of surgery will depend on the amount of excess fat, tissue, and skin that requires removal.

During the surgery, only tiny incisions are required at the sites remote from the breasts, and the tissue is removed through a surgical vacuum. Once the excess fat tissue is removed, you’ll see immediate results and no follow-up surgery is necessary.

Am I a Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?

To be a good candidate for this surgery you should be healthy, at a stable body weight, and have realistic about any risks and future outcomes. Although complications are rare, some potential risks include infection, breast asymmetry, excessive scarring, and other issues. Short-term side effects include swelling, bruising, and discomfort.
