How to Prepare for Your Rhinoplasty Consultation

Posted March 17, 2025 in Uncategorized

If you’re considering rhinoplasty, your consultation is the first important step toward achieving your desired results. Proper preparation can ensure you get the most out of your appointment and help you feel more confident in your decision. Here’s how to prepare for your rhinoplasty:

1. Do Your Research

Before scheduling your consultation, research the procedure to understand its purpose, techniques, and recovery process. This knowledge will help you ask informed questions and set realistic expectations.

2. Choose the Right Surgeon

Look for a board-certified plastic surgeon, like Dr. Matthew Blanton who specializes in rhinoplasty. Read reviews, check before-and-after photos, and verify their credentials to ensure you’re in good hands.

3. Prepare Your Medical History

Be ready to discuss your medical history, including any previous nasal injuries, breathing issues, allergies, medications, and past surgeries. Ideally we request you complete your medical history using our portal (insert link to portal). Dr. Blanton will use this information to assess your candidacy for the procedure.

4. Identify Your Goals

Clearly define what you hope to achieve with rhinoplasty. Dr. Blanton will ask you about three things you do not like about your nose. Some patients will bring in photoshop simulations of their nose to help determine their goals. Occasionally, reference photos provide some guidance, but remember that the goal is to enhance your natural features rather than replicate someone else’s nose.

5. Write Down Questions

Prepare a list of questions to ask your surgeon, such as:

  • What surgical technique do you recommend for my case?
  • What are the risks and potential complications?
  • What can I expect during recovery?
  • Can I see before-and-after photos of your previous patients?
  • How much downtime should I plan for?

6. Understand the Financial Aspect

Rhinoplasty can be a significant investment. Ask about the cost and if needed any payment options. Our patient coordinator will assist you with this information either prior to your consult and/or at your consultation.

7. Take Photos of Your Nose

Some patients will bring in photoshop simulations of their “new” nose to help determine their goals. If this helps you then please take clear pictures from multiple angles to help assess potential changes and improvements.

8. Avoid Certain Medications & Supplements

Your surgeon may advise avoiding blood-thinning medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, and certain supplements before surgery to reduce the risk of excessive bleeding.

9. Have Realistic Expectations

While rhinoplasty can create beautiful changes, it’s important to have realistic expectations. Dr. Blanton will discuss what’s possible based on your facial structure and nasal anatomy. The VECTRA simulation taken at the consultation can usually help determine whether the patient has realistic expectations.

10. Prepare For Your Rhinoplasty Emotionally

Undergoing any cosmetic procedure can be emotional. Consider talking to others who have had the surgery or reading about real patient experiences to gain insight into the journey.

By taking these steps, you’ll feel more confident to prepare for your rhinoplasty consultation. A well-informed patient is more likely to achieve satisfying results and a smooth surgical experience.
