Pink October is upon us. At Specialists in Plastic Surgerywe are proud to be celebrating BRA Day. Aptly named, BRA Day, or, Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day, is a campaign dedicated to promoting awareness of the many reconstruction options available to a woman post mastectomy. In addition to promoting awareness, BRA Day is designed to educate women as well as increase access to information about breast reconstruction.
Did You Know? Federal law mandates coverage of breast reconstruction for all breast cancer patients. |
Each year, more than 296,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States. A mastectomy often proves to be a life-saving surgery. Although highly effective at treating the cancer itself, a mastectomy greatly alters a woman’s body. The physical effects often pale in comparison to the emotional struggle. For many women, reconstruction surgery is an important step in their recovery and healing process.
Many women, however, remain in the dark when it comes to breast reconstruction. A staggering 70 percent of women are not informed of the reconstructive options available to them. Of those select few who are informed, only 23 percent are aware of the wide range of reconstruction choices. Uncertain of the options and results, many women are hesitant to undergo reconstruction. In fact, only 22 percent of women are familiar with the excellent results breast reconstruction yields.
In hopes of raising these statistics, BRA Day was started. While breast reconstruction may not be right for every woman, the belief of BRA Day supporters is that all women should be made aware of the options. BRA Day also advocates that all women should be offered reconstruction in both a timely and safe manner.
We look forward to celebrating BRA Day with you!
