With well over 68,000 surgeries performed, breast reduction was at an all-time high in 2015. More impressive, however, is, at 27,456, male breast reduction accounted for 40 percent of all breast reductions performed. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, this demonstrates a five percent increase in just the past year and a whopping 35 percent increase since year the 2000—exemplifying the continued and growing popularity of male breast reduction.

Why the sudden interest? Here, we explore three reasons why men choose breast reduction surgery at Specialists in Plastic Surgery.

The Stigma has Lifted

An overall trend, men are increasingly embracing cosmetic enhancement. From Botox® to laser hair removal, male procedures have seen a 23 percent uptick in the past 15 years. With an increased awareness, everything from social media to reality TV has created a culture of openness and acceptance.

Men are Motivated to Take Control of Their Bodies—and Lives

Men struggling with gynecomastia now see breast reduction surgery as a way to feel comfortable and confident in and with their body. Often, our clients are motivated by their desire to achieve a toned and masculine physique that has been otherwise unattainable. Beyond physical, men enjoy the rewarding emotional benefits along with the physical benefits.

Does Not Interfere with a Busy Schedule

Better informed, men recognize that recovery from breast reduction is not as time consuming as they had previously thought. Far less disruptive to their schedule, men have found that after a few days of rest, they are able to return to work and light, less demanding social obligations. It is also easy to hide post-surgical garments underneath clothing as your body heals.
