A group of women supporting breast cancer researchIt’s October, which means everywhere you turn amidst the pumpkin lattes and fall leaves, there are pink ribbons to remind us about the importance of getting your annual mammogram to screen for breast cancer. Mammograms save lives, and you should schedule your annual screening if you have not. But what about the woman who has already either had breast cancer or discovered they carried the BRCA-1 or BRCA-2 genes? For women who have had a mastectomy, this month can be a painful reminder. Breast reconstructive surgery can help restore your self-confidence if you are struggling to accept your mastectomy scars.

Am I A Good Candidate for Breast Reconstructive Surgery?

Most women who have undergone breast cancer surgery are candidates for breast reconstruction. There are several surgical breast reconstruction techniques. You should not undergo breast reconstruction surgery until you have been cleared by your oncologist and your health is stable. You should not require any further radiation or treatment.

Can I Get Reconstructive Surgery During the Mastectomy?

For some breast cancer survivors, the ideal time to have breast reconstruction surgery is during the mastectomy. Breast reconstruction surgery can either be performed creating a tissue flap or through the use of implants. You can discuss the options with your physician during your consultation. Breast reconstruction surgery can either restore the shape and size of the breasts you had before, or you can choose to augment your breasts.

Being diagnosed with breast cancer is frightening, and once you’ve finished fighting and you are left with the scars of your battle, those daily reminders can be traumatizing.
