Discover a natural, more youthful version of yourself!
A neuromodulator (or “wrinkle relaxer”) is an injectable medication that relaxes and softens the skin by relaxing targeted facial muscles. The process of injecting a neuromodulator requires a certain skill set to achieve a natural-looking result. At our Raleigh, NC practice, Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport are injected with a unique, detailed focus that provides natural results.
Our highly skilled injectors Amanda, PA-C and Benjamin Wood, MD have extensive training and experience in administering nonsurgical treatments in a safe and effective manner. This approach ensures that you simply achieve a more youthful and refreshed version of yourself.
Nationally, neuromodulators are the most commonly performed minimally-invasive cosmetic procedure. In 2019, there were 7.7 million treatments performed in the United States with neuromodulator products.
What are the Neuromodulator product options?
We have three different neuromodulator products at our Raleigh, NC office: Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport.
Botox® has been the most popular cosmetic procedure in the United States for the last three years. Since its FDA approval for cosmetic use in 2002, Botox has proven to be an effective treatment for frown lines, crow's feet, and forehead lines.
Xeomin® is an FDA-approved and clinically proven treatment for smoothing frown lines. It’s made through a unique precision manufacturing process that isolates the therapeutic component of the molecule and removes the complexing proteins that don't play an active role in treatment.
Dysport® is an FDA-approved option to soften and smooth frown lines between the brows for up to 5 months.
Who Should Get Botox, Xeomin, or Dysport?
Neuromodulators are best for healthy adults (18-65 years old) who are bothered by facial lines and wrinkles. In addition to being an effective wrinkle treatment, neuromodulators have also been used to treat migraine headaches, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, and excessive sweating.
Areas most commonly treated with neuromodulators
- Frown lines (aka the “11s” between the eyebrows)
- Forehead lines and wrinkles
- Crow’s feet (aka “smile lines”)
- Gummy Smile
- Dimpled Chin
- Neck bands
- Downturned mouth lines
- Modest neck and jaw laxity
We are also offering a new technique to effectively tighten and lift the lower face, jawline, and neck with neuromodulators (i.e. Botox, Dysport, Xeomin). Sometimes referred to as the “Nefertiti lift,” named after the Egyptian queen who had a strong, dominant jawline, neuromodulators have proven beneficial for patients with neck banding, downturned areas near the lips, and modest skin laxity around the neck and jawline.

What to Expect During Treatment with Botox, Xeomin, or Dysport
Treatment with neuromodulators typically involves a few simple injections. Numbing cream is rarely necessary, but may be used to improve comfort in sensitive areas. Using a thin needle, we inject the medication just below the surface of the skin into the facial muscles that are contracting and causing lines and wrinkles to form.
Muscles that are treated with neuromodulators will be relaxed, but will not be prevented from forming natural facial expressions. The treatment can easily be finished within 15-30 minutes. Neuromodulator treatments are often combined with other non-surgical treatments, including dermal fillers and laser skin resurfacing.
After Your Treatment
There’s no downtime after a neuromodulator treatment, so you can return to normal activities right away. You may experience some slight bruising or swelling at the site of injection, which can be covered with makeup.
Once injected, neuromodulators block nerve impulses to help temporarily relax the treated muscles. As a result, you will look younger and have a more rejuvenated facial expression, with fewer lines and wrinkles. The results of neuromodulators typically take three to seven days to fully appear and generally last at least three to four months.
Understanding the Risks of Botulinum Toxin
All three neuromodulators have been extensively studied for many years and are very safe, but there are possible side effects to consider, including bruising, swelling, redness or itching at the injection site. It is also possible that you will experience an allergic reaction, fatigue, headache, flu-like symptoms, or eyelid droop. All of these potential side effects will be discussed in-depth during your visit.
