Pregnancy, weight changes and natural aging can all contribute to undesirable sagging or drooping breasts. A personalized breast lift surgery at our Raleigh or Cary surgery center will raise the position of the breasts to create a firmer and more youthful-looking appearance, without altering overall cup size.
Who Should Get Breast Lift Surgery?
Breast lift surgery is ideal for healthy women of a stable weight, who do not intend to have additional children.
A breast lift can treat:
- Downward pointing areolas or nipples
- Nipples hanging below the breast crease
- Breasts with decreased firmness
- Sagging, pendulous breasts
A breast lift should give your breasts better contour and a more youthful appearance. The breasts will be firmer, higher and more rounded. A breast lift will not affect the size or volume of your breasts, but will return them to a youthful position.
What to Expect During Your Breast Lift in Raleigh
A breast lift procedure is performed under general or local anesthesia combined with intravenous sedation. Incisions are made around the areola (extending above it and creating a new position for the nipple), along the breast crease, and in a vertical line connecting the other two incisions.
Excess skin is removed from the bottom of the breast and the nipple and areola are moved to a higher location on the breast. The nipple and areola remained attached to the underlying breast tissue, reducing the risk of sensation loss. For some patients, other incision patterns may be appropriate. We will help you determine which technique is best for you based on your degree of breast sagging.
After Your Surgery
After surgery, the incisions are bandaged. Temporary surgical drains may also be placed to collect fluid buildup. You will need to wear a compression garment and support bra for the first several weeks of recovery to promote healing and minimize swelling. Initial swelling will contribute to some feeling of discomfort or tightness in the chest. This can be treated with medication. Bandages will be removed in a few days.
Recovery times vary. Normal activities are usually resumed in about a week, and more strenuous activity in three to six weeks. After that, your breasts will still need to be protected from impact and sun exposure for several months. Incision lines will fade and flatten over the course of 12-18 months.
Understanding the Risks of a Breast Lift
As with all surgical procedures, there are risks associated with breast lift surgery. Potential adverse events may include discomfort, infection, changes in sensitivity and asymmetry. These risks, along with steps you can take to minimize them, will be discussed in detail during your consultation.
