What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed in the United States. Designed to remove localized pockets of fat, liposuction is ideal for people who have been unable to achieve a slimmer body shape despite a healthy diet and exercise routine.
Who Should Get Liposuction?
Although liposuction should not be used as a weight-loss method, it can remove unwanted pockets of fat from your body and thereby improve your figure.
You may be a liposuction candidate if you:
- are at a healthy and stable body weight
- desire to slim down specific body areas
- have adequate skin elasticity.
With liposuction, we can remove fat deposits from the abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, calves, ankles, breasts, arms, back, and neck. Our surgeons can obtain great results with two types of liposuction: suction-assisted liposuction (SAL), and ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL). Prior to electing liposuction, you should be healthy and have realistic expectations for the outcome. A consultation is the best way to find out if liposuction in Raleigh is suitable for you. Please be prepared to discuss factors such as your medical history, current medications, and aesthetic goals.
What to Expect During Your Liposuction
Liposuction can be performed with a local or general anesthetic, depending on the area(s) treated. After administering anesthesia, we begin by making a small incision near the targeted area. A thin tube attached to a vacuum device is then inserted.
Using gentle back and forth motions, we break up and suction out the excess fat. After the fat is removed, incisions are closed with sutures and dressings. Occasionally, temporary drains are placed to collect excess fluid. The treatment area will then be wrapped in an elastic compression garment.
Liposuction Before and After
After Your Liposuction Surgery
Most patients are able to return home the same day of surgery. Immediately following your procedure, you may experience some discomfort and tenderness in the treatment area. Moderate bruising and redness are also common for the first several days. If a large area has been treated with liposuction, we can prescribe pain medication to help you manage discomfort.
Swelling may obscure the final results of your liposuction surgery for several weeks. It is important to get plenty of rest for the first few days, but most patients are able to resume normal activities within ten days or less. Rigorous physical activity may be restricted for several weeks. Because incisions made during liposuction are small and often concealed in the natural contours of the body, scarring will be minimal.
