A woman’s body can change significantly as she gets older. With factors such as childbirth and the normal effects of age, women may become self-conscious about the look of the area around their vaginas. Skin and tissue of the labia often lose elasticity, resulting in a lax or aged appearance as well as physical discomfort. Labiaplasty is a surgery performed by our team of board-certified plastic surgeons, to restore a woman’s most intimate area and renew her self-confidence.
What is labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a minor surgical procedure to improve the appearance of a woman’s external genitalia. The most common need is to reduce the labia minora, the inner genital lips. These can overhang the outer lips (labia majora) or appear uneven or overly thick. Beyond appearance, overhanging labia minora can create rubbing and chafing during activities such as cycling, or they can appear bulky when wearing certain types of clothing. This surgery corrects that.
Who is a good candidate for labiaplasty?
There isn’t a “stock” reason or need for having this procedure; it is a completely personal decision. Some women seek to change the aesthetic appearance of their labia. Others want to overcome their labia interfering with intimacy or certain sports or activities. A woman shouldn’t have any discomfort during these times. Plus, if you feel self-conscious during intimacy, no one deserves to have those feelings. Labiaplasty does not involve a difficult recovery.
Who Should Consider Labiaplasty Surgery?
This vaginal rejuvenation surgery is great for women who are looking to correct the physical changes to the labia caused by age or pregnancy and childbirth. However, this surgery may also be performed for younger women who are self-conscious about the external appearance of their vaginas.
Being unhappy with this area can lead to emotional problems such as low self-esteem or stress when being intimate with one’s partner. Loose skin and tissue of the labia can also cause physical pain, discomfort, or poor hygiene. Labiaplasty can help to dramatically improve both emotional and physical concerns to help women feel confident and sexy.
Expectations for Your Labiaplasty
During your consultation, you will discuss your unique concerns and expectations with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons. They will work closely with you to develop a personalized plan for your labiaplasty.
Incisions for labiaplasty surgery are made within the natural contours of the surrounding area to minimize any future scar visibility. Excess skin and tissue are then removed and tightened to achieve your desired outcome.
How is labiaplasty performed?
The methods our three surgeons use for labiaplasty are tailored specifically to the individual patient and her goals for the procedure. The most common need is to reduce the labia minora, which are situated inside the labia majora. To do so, they use two methods. In a “wedge” incision, a vertical wedge of labia minor tissue is removed. In an “edge” excision, the tissue is removed along the edge of the lips. In many cases, extra folds of the clitoral hood are also reduced at the same time.
In cases where the labia majora are too large and uncomfortable, our surgeons will remove an elliptical-pattern piece of tissue through a small, hidden incision.
How long does a labiaplasty procedure take?
These are not involved in procedures. They usually take around 45 minutes to one hour.
What kind of anesthesia is used for labiaplasty?
These are outpatient procedures that only usually require local anesthesia.
After Your Labiaplasty
Shortly after your surgery is complete, you are able to return home under the care of a loved one. It is important to rest and limit any moving around for about four to five days as your body heals. Sex after labiaplasty should be avoided for four to six weeks to avoid any unnecessary risks or complications.
The natural-looking results of labiaplasty often have a very positive impact on women who undergo this procedure. Many of our patients speak of a life-changing boost in self-confidence, as well as improved levels of intimacy with their partners.
What is recovery like after labiaplasty?
After your surgery, there will be some swelling and pain. This can be lessened with icing for 20 minutes on and then 20 minutes off for the first day or two. You’ll need to restrict your activity to low-key options for the first five days after surgery. Exercise will have to wait for two to three weeks, in most cases. Sexual intercourse needs to wait for at least 4-6 weeks. This is important, as engaging in sex too soon after labiaplasty risks tearing the incisions. Likewise, tampons must be avoided for six weeks. If minor trimming was performed, your recovery may be faster and not as involved.
Is labiaplasty a painful surgery?
There is a large number of nerves in the tissues involved in these procedures. But that doesn’t mean these are overly painful recoveries. If you follow the recovery instructions we provide, your pain can be mitigated quite successfully.
Will my scars be visible after labiaplasty?
The scars from these procedures are very small. Plus, they can be effectively hidden in the natural creases of the area, making them virtually invisible moving forward. Thanks to the board-certified expertise and experience of our three Specialists in Plastic Surgery surgeons, you’ll be happy with your results and the lack of visible scarring.
Will labiaplasty affect my sensitivity?
These surgeries don’t remove or damage any of the sensory nerves in the area, so your sensitivity shouldn’t be changed. The reality is that, since unnecessary tissue has been removed, many women report enhanced sensation after having labiaplasty. Plus, it’s important to know that these surgeries don’t involve the clitoris at all, so there cannot be any change in sensation there.
What are the risks and complications involved with labiaplasty?
Thanks to the highly vascular nature of the vaginal area, risks with this surgery are low. The risks are for potential chronic dryness, possible pain during intercourse, and loss of sensation. Loss of sensation is a higher risk the more tissue that is removed, but the risks are still quite low.
