Fat Transfer at Specialists in Plastic Surgery, Raleigh NC
Fat grafting can augment your facial features to fill in wrinkles and skin depressions. Unlike other injectable products, fat grafting uses only natural materials. As an added benefit, donor fat can be taken from trouble areas elsewhere on your body. Fat grafting is often performed at the time of a facelift procedure to provide volume and youthful appearance.
Who Should Get Fat Grafting?
The best candidates for facial fat grafting are healthy and have realistic expectations.
Facial fat grafting can treat:
- facial creases and folds
- hollow cheeks
- laugh lines
- thin lips.
After facial fat grafting, your face will appear smoother, and the targeted treatment areas will have a fuller, more youthful contour. You can also anticipate improved facial balance.
What to Expect During Your Facial Fat Grafting
Prior to your procedure, the donor locations are marked for fat removal. Donor fat may be liposuctioned from trouble areas in the hips, thighs, abdomen, arms, or buttocks. These areas are cleansed and small incisions are made in hidden locations. A liposuction cannula or low pressure syringe is then inserted into the incisions. The fat is carefully withdrawn, followed by incision closure.
Before injection, the fat is purified and prepared. The recipient sites are marked and cleansed. Fat is injected into these areas at varying depths to form an entire grid of injected fat. Massage may be used at the end of treatment to ensure even distribution.
After Fat Grafting
After fat grafting, standard dressings, tape, and compression garments are applied to the treatment area. Although some swelling and bruising is likley after the procedure, over-the-counter pain medication should be sufficient to manage discomfort. Swelling and bruising should resolve after two to three weeks. Some fat is usually absorbed naturally by the body, so the injection sites may be slightly over-filled at first to compensate for this effect.
Understanding the Risks of Facial Fat Grafting
Fat grafting has no risk of allergic reaction because it is performed using your own fat cells. As with any surgery, facial fat grafting has potential complications such as infection, bleeding, scarring, asymmetry and changes in sensitivity.
