Breast asymmetry surgery is not always necessary, but if you have a noticeable difference in size between one breast and the other or one nipple and the other and it makes you self-conscious, you should consider how breast asymmetry correction could improve your self-esteem and make you more comfortable with intimacy or with wearing form-fitting clothing.

Asymmetric Breasts Are Very Common

Asymmetric breasts are very common, and correction breast symmetry is rarely a medical necessity. For some women, however, the difference in size between the two breasts is noticeable enough to be uncomfortable. We recommend considering breast asymmetry surgery when breast that are noticeably different in size, nipples or areolas are asymmetrical, or your different breast sizes make you feel self-conscious.

What Causes Breast Asymmetry?

Asymmetric breasts can occur because of a hereditary trait. They can also develop over time due to hormones, breastfeeding, aging, or changes that occur because of pregnancy. In any case of breast asymmetry surgery, the goal is to achieve a similar size, shape, and nipple location for each breast.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Corrective Breast Surgery?

Women who have breast correction surgery for uneven or asymmetrical breasts will need to determine whether they want to augment the smaller breast or remove tissue from the larger breast. In some cases, nipple or areola reduction can improve symmetry between the breasts, as well. More than one procedure may be necessary to achieve desired results. To be a good candidate for breast asymmetry surgery, you should be in good health and be a non-smoker.

How Long Does It Take to Recover from Breast Asymmetry Surgery?

For the first two days after surgery and sometimes longer, you will experience some pain and swelling. It will be necessary for you to have help during this stage of recovery. Do not be surprised to see bruising; it is completely normal. After the first few days, you’ll be able to resume light activity, but you should wait for at least a month before doing any lifting.
