Who Should Get Laser Resurfacing?

Laser resurfacing treatment is suitable for adults of all ages. You may want to consider laser resurfacing if you are bothered by:

  • acne scars
  • lines and wrinkles
  • age spots
  • sun spots
  • uneven skin texture
  • uneven skin pigmentation

A variety of skin tones and types can benefit from laser skin resurfacing. After completing laser resurfacing, your skin will regrow smoother and firmer.

Ideal candidates will possess good overall health and realistic expectations. During a consultation, we can determine if laser resurfacing is the right option for you.

What to Expect During Your Laser Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing is an outpatient procedure that can take from thirty minutes to two hours to complete, based on the extent of your procedure. Laser resurfacing can be painful, so the treatment area will be numbed with local anesthetics. Oral or intravenous sedation can be administered to ensure your comfort during treatment.

Using a handheld device, your cosmetic doctor will deliver pulses of laser energy to the treatment area. As the laser passes over the treatment area, it penetrates through the outer layers of skin. Damaged skin cells are destroyed and healthy cell growth is stimulated.

After Your Treatment

A laser balm will be applied to your skin after treatment to minimize the risk of infection. This should remain for at least 24 hours. Your doctor will also provide you with topical treatments to enhance healing. You will need a friend or family member to drive you home.

Most patients required four to seven days off from work to recover. Normal activities can be resumed in about a week. Your skin will appear very red or sunburned for the first few days and then appear slightly pink for several weeks or even months after treatment. This redness generally lasts longer for fair-skinned patients. The final results will not be apparent for three to five months, but it will last for many years.

Understanding the Risks of Laser Resurfacing

During your consultation, we will discuss all possible complications and steps you can take to prevent them. Some possible complications associated with laser resurfacing include swelling, extended redness, skin irritation, abnormal healing and scarring.

Ultherapy®

Ultherapy is a the only FDA non-invasive procedure that uses ultrasound and the body’s own natural healing process to lift, tone, and tighten loose skin on the brow, neck, and under the chin as well as the décolleté.

What Is Ultherapy and What Is It Used For?

It uses the safe, time-tested energy of ultrasound to stimulate the deep structural support layers of the skin—including those typically addressed in a surgical facelift—without disturbing the surface of the skin.

How Long Is Each Treatment? How Many Treatments Will I Need?

With Ultherapy, you can go about your day after a single, sixty-to-ninety minute in-office procedure. Only one treatment is typically needed. Some patients may return for a second treatment after a year or so if they begin noticing further signs of aging.

Is Ultherapy Painful?

Unlike lasers, which penetrate the skin from the outside-in, Ultherapy bypasses the surface of the skin, specifically targeting the deep, structural skin tissues where collagen lives. Using ultrasound technology, Ultherapy actually works from the inside-out to lift and tighten skin non-invasively. The procedure is not “painful;” however, it can become uncomfortable due to the depth and length of the treatment.

What Can I Expect Before Treatment?

No preparation whatsoever is required before your Ultherapy procedure.

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

It is not uncommon to experience slight swelling for a few days, or tingling and tenderness to the touch for a few weeks following the procedure, but these are mild and temporary in nature. You may notice a short-term “boost,” but the natural process of creating new, more elastic, collagen builds over time. Results will unfold over the course of two to three months and some patients have reported continued improvement for up to six months, including lifting and tightening of the skin on the neck, under the chin, along the jawline, and on the brow. While ultrasound does not duplicate the results of surgery, Ultherapy has proven to be an inviting alternative for those who are not yet ready for surgery.

IPL/AFT Photo Rejuvenation

Have you been wanting to restore a youthful appearance to your skin without having to undergo invasive treatments and a lengthy recovery? Our IPL (intense pulsed light), or AFT (advanced fluorescent technology) skin rejuvenation treatments can help take years off your appearance and renew a youthful glow with minimal downtime and maximum benefits. IPL/AFT treatments are available at The Museum Spa & Laser Center in Raleigh.

Who Should Consider IPL/AFT Skin Rejuvenation?

We currently offer AFT photo-facial treatments to effectively treat rosacea, facial flushing, red chests and necks, brown spots, sun damage and irregular skin pigmentation of most skin types. Photo damaged skin with hyperpigmentation (brown spots), enlarged pores, and telangiectasia (veins) can be improved with AFT treatments. Visible improvement is achieved with little discomfort and minimal risk. During the treatment, light energy delivers a series of gentle pulses to the skin non-invasively. The light passes harmlessly through the skin and is absorbed by spots and lesions. The abnormal cells are destroyed, leaving only healthy tissue. AFT also stimulates the growth of collagen, can decrease pore size, and gives skin a youthful appearance.

How Long Is Each Treatment? How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Because of AFT photo rejuvenation’s short treatment time, quick effects and lack of downtime, AFT therapy is one of our most popular treatments. A session lasts about 20-30 minutes, depending on the areas being treated. Typically, three to five sessions are scheduled at four week intervals. Some may be satisfied with the results of five sessions, and some may desire additional sessions.

Is AFT Photofacial Painful?

The treatment feels like a small rubber band snapping against the skin, with a potential lingering burning/tingling sensation for up to six hours after treatment.

What Can I Expect Before Treatment?

Prior to an AFT treatment you should be aware of your last sun exposure and of any medications you are currently taking. The light that penetrates the skin with the AFT treatment can have an adverse effect if these matters aren’t taken into consideration. Your laser nurse will review these with you at each treatment.

What Can I Expect Atter Treatment?

You may immediately return to your normal routine and even apply makeup. However, avoidance of sun exposure is strongly recommended or permanent pigmentation changes may occur. Side effects of AFT Photofacial may include temporary redness or swelling. Any potential swelling should be minimal and can be treated with cold compresses. The “coffee ground” spots (shattered melanin rising to the surface) in the treated area will flake off in approximately two weeks.

Tattoo Removal

What Is Q-switched Nd:YAG Laser and What Is It Used For?

The Q-switched Nd: YAG laser is used for tattoo removal. Tattoos are created by injecting colored pigment into small but deep holes made in the skin, and the marks or designs are relatively permanent. When people subsequently want their tattoos removed, most physicians today consider laser surgery one of the best methods. The Q-switched Nd:YAG is the most frequently used laser for safe and effective tattoo removal, leaving the skin natural-looking. During treatment, pulses of light from the laser are directed onto the tattoo, breaking up the tattoo pigment. Over the next several weeks the body’s macrophages remove the treated pigmented areas.

Q-switched laser systems can now remove all types of tattoos with little or no scarring. The Q-switched Nd: YAG laser is especially suited to the removal of dark blue and black inks. The frequency double Q-switched Nd: YAG laser is used to remove red and orange tattoos.

How Long Is Each Treatment? How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Treatment depends on the size, location, and coloring of the tattoo in addition to the patient’s age and skin type. Our nurses will determine the number of treatments necessary.

Is Tattoo Removal Painful?

While pain tolerance is an individual matter, most people tolerate the Q-switched Nd: YAG laser well and describe the sensation as being like a rubber band snap to the skin. The majority of patients require no anesthesia, though topical anesthetic is an option for sensitive areas.

What Can I Expect Before Treatment?

You will need to shave the area to be treated the night before or the morning of the scheduled appointment – it is that easy. It is sometimes even possible to do a second treatment during the same visit, after waiting about 20 minutes.

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

There is no downtime or recovery time after each treatment. You can have treatment and immediately return to normal activities. Avoid sun exposure, hot tubs, and saunas after treatment.

Pixel® CO2

What Is Pixel CO2 Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing? What Is it Used For?

Pixel CO2 Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing precisely removes outer layers of damaged skin to reveal the underlying skin which is softer, smoother, and younger looking. It is ideal for the treatment of enlarged pores, skin laxity and texture, skin discoloration and brown spots, acne scars, and sun damaged skin. Patients experience skin tightening, reduced wrinkles and fine lines, softening of deeper frown lines and wrinkles, noticeably improved skin tone and textures, and stimulated collagen formation.

How Long Is Each Treatment? How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The appointment time for a Pixel CO2 treatment is around two hours. You come in to sign consents, take ” before” pictures and then sit with a topical numbing agent for about an hour. After that, the procedure itself is very quick. Depending on the area being treated, it is usually over in twenty minutes. Typically, a single treatment is all that is needed; however, some patients may decide to repeat this treatment in a year or two.

The Pixel CO2 laser treatment can also be combined with a facelift or other surgical procedure to further enhance your results.

Is Pixel CO2 Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing Painful?

Most patients say they feel heat similar to a sunburn. A topical numbing agent will be used prior to the procedure to minimize any discomfort.

What Can I Expect Before Treatment?

Prior to the day of your treatment, your laser nurse will discuss whether there are any products you need to start using beforehand, and if there are any medications you may have to stop taking for a brief period. On the day of your treatment you will have a topical numbing agent applied to the treatment area that will take full effect within an hour of its application. If the eyelids are being treated, numbing eye drops will be instilled, along with protective corneal shields (steel contacts).

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

During the consultation, your laser nurse will go over all of your post care instructions and what to expect after your treatment. Immediately after the procedure, your face will feel hot (similar to a sunburn); however, the topical numbing cream will take effect again and work for another hour or two. Cold compresses are applied to your skin along with a post laser balm.
