Lip Enhancement

Lip augmentation can create plumper, fuller lips or reduce fine lines around the mouth. There are many options for lip augmentation, and your doctor can recommend the one that best suits you.

  • Laser Lip Rejuvenation: Laser treatments stimulate the growth of new collagen and remove layers of dead old skin. This is effective for treating fine lines but not for plumping the lips. Recovering from laser lip rejuvenation takes a couple of days, but, usually only one treatment is necessary.

  • Fillers: These treatments have few side effects and generally no downtime although the effects wear off with time.

  • Restylane®: Restylane® is a natural cosmetic dermal filler. It is made of hyaluronic acid, a compound that already exists in the body. Restylane has less chance of allergic reaction than animal-based treatments.

  • Hylaform®: This is a purified form of hyaluronic acid which mimics the effects of the hyaluronic acid occurring naturally in the body.

  • Juvéderm®: Juvéderm® is a natural cosmetic dermal filler. It is made of hyaluronic acid, a compound which already exists in the body. Juvéderm has less chance of allergic reactions than animal-based treatments. It is made by Allegan®, the manufacturer of Botox®.

What are Dermal Fillers?

Loss of facial volume is a common age-related problem for many people. The resulting wrinkles, lines, and folds can make you appear older and less vibrant than you feel.

Today, we can correct this problem with dermal fillers, a non-invasive treatment that can augment the tissue and temporarily correct wrinkles and folds. We have many different types of dermal fillers, including fillers made with hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite, poly-L-lactic acid, and more.

Who Can Benefit from Dermal Fillers?

Most of today’s popular dermal fillers are made with hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring ingredient in your tissue. Acting as a hydrator, cell protector, and cushioning agent, hyaluronic acid restores youthful volume in your skin.

Other popular injectable fillers use ingredients that stimulate gradual collagen deposition, creating a long-lasting reduction of wrinkles and folds. Fillers differ from Botulinum neurotoxin. Instead of acting on the facial muscles as Botox does, dermal fillers augment the tissue to restore lost volume and correct skin depressions.

Injectable fillers can treat a wide variety of skin conditions:

  • Nasolabial folds
  • Marionette lines
  • Lipstick lines
  • Hollow under eyes
  • Sunken cheeks
  • Crow’s feet

During a consultation, we’ll determine if dermal filler treatments can achieve your goals for cosmetic enhancement. Fillers are usually ideal for people who don’t have the time or desire for cosmetic surgery. Although the results are temporary, a filler can rejuvenate your appearance for six months to one year. With regular follow-up appointments, you can maintain your new youthful appearance.

What to Expect During Your Dermal Filler Treatment

A dermal filler treatment is relatively quick and comfortable. First, we cleanse the treatment site and apply a topical anesthetic (if necessary) to ensure your comfort. We carefully inject the filler into the wrinkle or depression and then massage the area to promote a smooth result. The entire treatment can be finished within 30 minutes or less.

After Your Treatment

After treatment, you may have some swelling, tenderness, or redness, which will subside in a short time. Indirect application of ice (as directed) to the treatment area can help manage these effects. How long your results last will depend on the product and the area(s) that are treated. The results of an injectable filler treatment will typically last less than a year as that is the time it takes your body to naturally break down the substance and clear it away.

Understanding the Risks of Dermal Fillers

When dermal fillers are administered by a qualified practitioner, side effects are infrequent and usually minor in nature. Nonetheless, people vary in their anatomy, their physical reactions to medications, and their healing abilities, so the outcome of treatment is never completely predictable. Like other injections, risks include infection, abscesses, open sores, scarring, lumpiness, and skin peeling, which may persist over the treated area.

Possible side effects of hyaluronic acid include redness, pain, firmness, swelling, lumps/bumps, bruising, itching, and discoloration. With collagen, the risk of allergic reaction is increased. To help determine if you are allergic to the substance, we will perform an allergy skin test about a month before the procedure. After the test is performed, the test site should be watched carefully for three or four weeks or longer. Report any sign of redness, itching, swelling, or other occurrences at the test site. An alternative to dermal fillers is fat transfer. With this treatment, an allergic reaction is not a concern because the fat is harvested from your own body.

Botox® & Dysport™

The process of injecting neurotoxin, fillers, and Kybella requires a certain skill set to achieve a natural-looking result. We hire only the most qualified nurse injectors who have extensive training and experience in administering nonsurgical treatments in a safe and effective manner.

Botox® has been the most popular cosmetic procedure in the United States for the last three years. Since its FDA approval for cosmetic use in 2002, Botox has proven to be an effective treatment for facial lines and wrinkles.

Who Should Get Botox or Dysport?

Botox is best for healthy adults (18-65 years old) who are bothered by facial lines and wrinkles. In addition to being an effective wrinkle treatment, Botox has also been used to treat migraine headaches, joint pain, and excessive sweating.

We are offering a new technique to effectively tighten and lift the lower face, brow, and neck with Neuromodulators (i.e. Botox, Dysport, Xeomin). Sometimes referred to as the “Nefertiti lift,” named after the Egyptian queen who had a strong, dominant jawline, Botox is indicated for patients with neck band, downturned areas near  the lips, and modest skin laxity around the neck and jawline.

Botulinum toxin can treat:

  • Frown lines
  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Neck bands
  • Downturned mouth lines
  • Modest neck and jaw laxity

What to Expect During Treatment with Botox or Dysport

Treatment with Botox involves a few simple injections. Numbing cream is rarely necessary, but may be used to improve comfort in sensitive areas. Using a thin needle, we inject Botox into the facial muscles that are contracting and causing lines and wrinkles to form. You may need several injections in a small area.

Muscles that are treated with Botox are relaxed, but will not be prevented from forming natural expressions. The treatment can easily be finished within 15-30 minutes. Botox treatments are often combined with other non-surgical treatments, including dermal fillers and laser skin resurfacing.

After Your Treatment

There’s no downtime after Botox, so you can return to normal activities right away. You may experience some slight bruising or swelling at the site of injection, which can be covered with makeup.

Once injected, Botox blocks nerve impulses in the treated muscles. As a result, you will look younger and have a more relaxed facial expression, with fewer lines and wrinkles. The results of Botox take three to four days to fully appear. Botox does not provide a permanent solution to fine lines and wrinkles. To maintain results, you will need regular treatments every three to six months.

Understanding the Risks of Botulinum Toxin

More than 7 million people in 70 different countries have had treatment with Botox®. It’s a safe treatment, but there are possible side effects to consider, including bruising, swelling, redness or itching at the injection site. It is also possible that you will experience an allergic reaction, fatigue, headache, flu-like symptoms, or eyelid droop. All of these potential side effects will be discussed in-depth during your visit.

Chin Fat Reduction

Excess fat along the chin and jawline is a common problem for many men and women. Unfortunately, this area of the face is also often one of the most difficult parts of the body from which to lose fat–making it difficult to achieve your ideal facial shape and profile despite a healthy lifestyle. Now there is Kybella, a non-surgical method of reducing fat beneath the chin to help sculpt younger facial contours.

How Does Kybella Work?

Facial liposuction has always been a popular method of reducing excess fat and improving facial contours for a more youthful and chiseled appearance. However, not everyone is ready to commit to surgery and may be more interested in non-surgical options. Unlike laser or ultrasound treatments, Kybella is a one-of-a-kind injectable treatment approved by the FDA for reducing problem submental fat (fat beneath the chin). Many men and women seek out Kybella for reducing the appearance of a double chin.

Kybella works due to the active ingredient known as deoxycholic acid. This substance has been proven both safe and effective for liquefying fat below the chin and other surrounding areas of the face. When you come in for your Kybella treatment at Specialists in Plastic Surgery, PA, your plastic surgeon will carefully mark the injection sites and describe the process to you in detail. Any questions you may have about Kybella can be answered prior to your treatment during your consultation.

What Can I Expect During My Kybella Treatment?

Your injection treatment will be scheduled after your physician consultation if you are deemed a Kybella candidate. Depending on your specific situation, up to 50 injections may be made during a single treatment session. A typical Kybella treatment should last no longer than 15-20 minutes, and you will be able to continue your normal routine afterwards with little to no downtime. Your plastic surgeon may recommend an average of two individual sessions (spaced six weeks apart) for the best results and maximum treatment of the problem fat.

When Can I Expect to See Results After a Kybella Treatment?

It is important to realize that the effects of Kybella are not completely immediate. It may take up to six treatments to notice the full results of your procedure, but 80 percent of patients see a significant reduction in excess fat beneath their chins after their last Kybella treatment. Once the submental fat has been reduced, it will not come back. You can maintain long-lasting results with a healthy lifestyle.
