Mommy Makeover

Mother holding her daughter, happy after having a mommy makeoverAfter childbirth, a woman’s body undergoes a number of changes. Some people are able to get back to their pre-baby body relatively easily, but others may find it impossible. A mommy makeover is designed to address multiple areas of the body at once, so that you can get back to feeling like yourself as soon as possible.

If you are interested in a mommy makeover, don’t hesitate to contact the experienced plastic surgeons at Specialists in Plastic Surgery by calling 919-785-0505 to schedule your initial consultation.

What’s in a Mommy Makeover?

There is no set number of procedures included in a mommy makeover. Instead, it will be tailored to your personal goals. That being said, some of the most common procedures requested for a mommy makeover include:

After having a baby, often the breasts sag and deflate. In addition, pregnancy can stretch and loosen the abdominal muscles, which is impossible to correct with exercise and diet alone. Childbirth can also stretch the labia, and many women find it difficult to shed all of the weight put on during pregnancy.

Which procedures will best help you reach your goals can be determined during your consultation.

Who is a Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

The most common candidates for a mommy makeover are women who have had one or more children and want to regain a slimmer, shapelier body. However, you don’t have to be a mother to be a candidate. Anyone who wants to have multiple procedures done in order to achieve a comprehensive body makeover can be a candidate.

The best candidates for a mommy makeover are:

  • At or near a stable weight that they can maintain
  • In good general health
  • Non-smokers
  • Aware of the risks and have realistic expectations
  • Done having children

While having a mommy makeover will not interfere with your ability to have children, you should keep in mind that you may need revision surgery if you do have another child. This is why we recommend that your family be complete before you decide to undergo plastic surgery.

What Does a Mommy Makeover Cost?

The cost of a mommy makeover will depend on how many procedures you have, as well as how complex these procedures are. It’s impossible to give an accurate quote before seeing you in person and discussing your goals.

Cost should never be the deciding factor when choosing your surgeon. We offer a range of financing options to our patients so that you don’t need to worry about paying for your entire mommy makeover upfront. Please feel free to ask us about financing during your consultation.

Bra-Roll Excision

Excess fat along the bra line is a common concern for many women. Even those who are otherwise healthy and in good shape may struggle with a little bit extra along the armpit and upper back when wearing certain tops or lingerie. A bra-roll excision is a procedure that targets this area of excess skin and tissue to create a smoother, natural-looking contour.

Who Should Consider Bra-Roll Excision?

We recommend bra-roll excision surgery for women who are struggling to get rid of the pesky skin and fat that often pokes out just above a bra or other form-fitting tops. This area is often resistant to traditional methods of diet and exercise, and can persist even when you have reached your goal weight and are otherwise happy with your figure. This surgery helps to refine your body’s silhouette and give you the confidence to wear all of your favorite outfits without hesitation.

What to Expect from Your Bra-Roll Excision Surgery

A bra-roll excision is a surgery that targets the excess skin and/or fat that resides around the bra area. During your consultation, we can determine the best approach for your personalized procedure.

Depending on your unique condition, our board certified plastic surgeons may use a combination of skin excision/tightening and liposuction fat reduction. Some women’s problem may be caused mostly by excess skin and tissue, whereas others may be dealing with small amounts of stubborn fat. Occasionally, CoolSculpting could improve this area.

After Your Bra-Roll Excision

Once your surgery is complete, you will notice a firmer, well-contoured silhouette of your upper body. Women often feel more confident in their favorite outfits and are excited to show off their new figures in a form-fitting dress or bikini.

Labiaplasty
in Raleigh NC

A woman’s body can change significantly as she gets older. With factors such as childbirth and the normal effects of age, women may become self-conscious about the look of the area around their vaginas. Skin and tissue of the labia often lose elasticity, resulting in a lax or aged appearance as well as physical discomfort. Labiaplasty is a surgery performed by our team of board-certified plastic surgeons, to restore a woman’s most intimate area and renew her self-confidence.

What is labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a minor surgical procedure to improve the appearance of a woman’s external genitalia. The most common need is to reduce the labia minora, the inner genital lips. These can overhang the outer lips (labia majora) or appear uneven or overly thick. Beyond appearance, overhanging labia minora can create rubbing and chafing during activities such as cycling, or they can appear bulky when wearing certain types of clothing. This surgery corrects that.

Who is a good candidate for labiaplasty?

There isn’t a “stock” reason or need for having this procedure; it is a completely personal decision. Some women seek to change the aesthetic appearance of their labia. Others want to overcome their labia interfering with intimacy or certain sports or activities. A woman shouldn’t have any discomfort during these times. Plus, if you feel self-conscious during intimacy, no one deserves to have those feelings. Labiaplasty does not involve a difficult recovery.

Who Should Consider Labiaplasty Surgery?

This vaginal rejuvenation surgery is great for women who are looking to correct the physical changes to the labia caused by age or pregnancy and childbirth. However, this surgery may also be performed for younger women who are self-conscious about the external appearance of their vaginas.

Being unhappy with this area can lead to emotional problems such as low self-esteem or stress when being intimate with one’s partner. Loose skin and tissue of the labia can also cause physical pain, discomfort, or poor hygiene. Labiaplasty can help to dramatically improve both emotional and physical concerns to help women feel confident and sexy.

Expectations for Your Labiaplasty

During your consultation, you will discuss your unique concerns and expectations with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons. They will work closely with you to develop a personalized plan for your labiaplasty.

Incisions for labiaplasty surgery are made within the natural contours of the surrounding area to minimize any future scar visibility. Excess skin and tissue are then removed and tightened to achieve your desired outcome.

How is labiaplasty performed?

The methods our three surgeons use for labiaplasty are tailored specifically to the individual patient and her goals for the procedure. The most common need is to reduce the labia minora, which are situated inside the labia majora. To do so, they use two methods. In a “wedge” incision, a vertical wedge of labia minor tissue is removed. In an “edge” excision, the tissue is removed along the edge of the lips. In many cases, extra folds of the clitoral hood are also reduced at the same time.

In cases where the labia majora are too large and uncomfortable, our surgeons will remove an elliptical-pattern piece of tissue through a small, hidden incision.

How long does a labiaplasty procedure take?

These are not involved in procedures. They usually take around 45 minutes to one hour.

Questions? Call Today!

What kind of anesthesia is used for labiaplasty?

These are outpatient procedures that only usually require local anesthesia.

After Your Labiaplasty

Shortly after your surgery is complete, you are able to return home under the care of a loved one. It is important to rest and limit any moving around for about four to five days as your body heals. Sex after labiaplasty should be avoided for four to six weeks to avoid any unnecessary risks or complications.

The natural-looking results of labiaplasty often have a very positive impact on women who undergo this procedure. Many of our patients speak of a life-changing boost in self-confidence, as well as improved levels of intimacy with their partners.

What is recovery like after labiaplasty?

After your surgery, there will be some swelling and pain. This can be lessened with icing for 20 minutes on and then 20 minutes off for the first day or two. You’ll need to restrict your activity to low-key options for the first five days after surgery. Exercise will have to wait for two to three weeks, in most cases. Sexual intercourse needs to wait for at least 4-6 weeks. This is important, as engaging in sex too soon after labiaplasty risks tearing the incisions. Likewise, tampons must be avoided for six weeks. If minor trimming was performed, your recovery may be faster and not as involved.

Is labiaplasty a painful surgery?

There is a large number of nerves in the tissues involved in these procedures. But that doesn’t mean these are overly painful recoveries. If you follow the recovery instructions we provide, your pain can be mitigated quite successfully.

Will my scars be visible after labiaplasty?

The scars from these procedures are very small. Plus, they can be effectively hidden in the natural creases of the area, making them virtually invisible moving forward. Thanks to the board-certified expertise and experience of our three Specialists in Plastic Surgery surgeons, you’ll be happy with your results and the lack of visible scarring.

Will labiaplasty affect my sensitivity?

These surgeries don’t remove or damage any of the sensory nerves in the area, so your sensitivity shouldn’t be changed. The reality is that, since unnecessary tissue has been removed, many women report enhanced sensation after having labiaplasty. Plus, it’s important to know that these surgeries don’t involve the clitoris at all, so there cannot be any change in sensation there.

What are the risks and complications involved with labiaplasty?

Thanks to the highly vascular nature of the vaginal area, risks with this surgery are low. The risks are for potential chronic dryness, possible pain during intercourse, and loss of sensation. Loss of sensation is a higher risk the more tissue that is removed, but the risks are still quite low.

CoolSculpting Frequently Asked Questions:

Am I a good candidate?

  • Although we see a variety of liposuction patients, we also see many patients who are interested in fat reduction even though the amount of unwanted fat they desire to have removed is not enough to require the traditional surgical procedure. This type of patient is typically in good health and close to their ideal weight. They may have small to medium-sized pockets of excess fat that won’t respond to diet and/or exercise.

What happens during the treatment?

  • CoolSculpting uses a process known as cryolipolysis. During treatment, heat is extracted from the body and cold temperature is applied externally to areas of unwanted fat. This technique freezes the fat cells without damaging the skin. Once the fat cells are frozen, they begin to crystallize and the fat cell membrane dissolves. This triggers the macrophages or “clean up cells” to begin the process of eliminating the dead cells as waste over the months following treatment. Other procedures that use laser and sonic waves to remove fat can damage other tissue by burning or shattering non-fat cells and leave scar tissue behind.

How much does CoolSculpting cost?

  • The price for the CoolSculpting procedure varies depending on your areas of concern, the number of sessions needed, and your ultimate goals. We will help create a customized treatment plan, in person, that’s tailored to your body, your goals, and your budget.

How long is each session? How many will I need?

  • Once we create your personalized treatment plan at your consultation we can calculate the length of time the treatment will take. This will all depend on how many areas are being treated. To meet your goals, a second session may be required.

Where does the fat go?

  • Once the fat cells are crystallized or frozen, your body naturally eliminates the dead fat cells through your lymphatic system. Once the targeted fat cells are gone, they are gone for good.

What does the procedure feel like?

  • Cold is a natural anesthetic! During the first 5-10 minutes, you may experience intense cold and pressure. After those first few minutes, the area goes numb and the discomfort lessens. Many people read, work or watch movies.

Is the procedure safe?

  • CoolSculpting is proud to say they are FDA cleared and have performed over 4.5 million treatments and have over 75 peer reviewed clinical studies – making it the most proven non-invasive body contouring device on the market!

What are the side effects?

  • Typical side effects include temporary numbness, redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging and pain. Rare side effects may also occur.

Is there any downtime following the procedure?

  • There ultimately isn’t any downtime from the CoolSculpting procedure. However, some people experience swelling and numbness that could hinder you from working out for a few days following the procedure. Although not required but highly recommended, a compression garment is suggested for comfort for the first seven days.

When should I start seeing results?

  • You may start to see reduction in the first three to four weeks and will experience the most dramatic results after three months.

What happens if I gain weight?

  • Patients who invest their money into their body tend to watch their weight. However, if you do gain weight it will be evenly distributed throughout your entire body and not just in the treated area.

*Patient results and experience may vary.

Thigh Lift

Thigh Lift (Thighplasty)

Following the success of major weight loss, many are faced with the reality of unsightly excess skin and fat present on the inner and outer thighs. A thigh lift, also known as thighplasty, can surgically remove this persistent fat and loose skin to reveal a slimmer body profile.

Who Should Get a Thigh Lift?

Aging, gravity, loss of skin elasticity and weight fluctuations can all contribute to an accumulation of excess tissue on the thighs. Thigh lift surgery can benefit people who are motivated to tighten and improve the contour of their thighs.

Candidates for a thigh lift are:

  • in generally good health
  • at a stable body weight
  • realistic about the risks, benefits and outcome
  • bothered by the appearance of their thighs and motivated to improve their shape.

Through a combination of liposuction and excision (tissue removal) techniques, a thigh lift can significantly improve the size, shape and contour of your thighs. Other body contouring procedures may be performed in conjunction with a thigh lift to create an overall slimmer appearance.

Thigh lift surgery may not be right for everyone. The best way to find out if you are an ideal candidate is to schedule a personal consultation, so we can discuss factors such as your health history and your goals for body contouring.

What to Expect During Your Thigh Lift

A thigh lift takes two to three hours and is typically performed under general anesthesia. There are a few different thigh lift techniques, including the medial thigh lift, inner thigh lift, and outer thigh lift. When possible, incisions are hidden in the natural contours of the body to conceal scarring.

As the incisions are made, the excess skin and fat will be removed and tightened. When necessary, liposuction can remove localized fat deposits. After reshaping the thighs, incisions are closed with temporary drains to collect fluid buildup. The treated area will also be wrapped in gauze and an elastic compression bandage to minimize excessive swelling and bruising.

After Your Surgery

After surgery, we will provide you with specific aftercare instructions and prescribe oral medication to manage your discomfort. After surgery, it is common for patients to experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort at the treated areas. Patients are encouraged to start walking as soon as possible. Most patients are mobile within a few days, but strenuous activities should be postponed for several weeks.

Recovery times vary among patients, but most are able to resume work and other normal activities within one to three weeks of surgery. The results of your thigh lift will become gradually apparent over the course of several weeks as swelling and bruising begin to subside. It may take several months for incision lines to fade and flatten.

Understanding the Risks of a Thigh Lift

All surgical procedures present a degree of risk and uncertainty. These risks will be discussed with you in-depth during the consultation process. Some risks associated with thigh lift surgery may include blood clots, infection, adverse reaction to anesthesia, hematoma, nerve damage, and excessive scarring.
