Skin Refinishing

Dermabrasion is a skin refinishing technique that removes damaged outer layers of skin with mechanical abrasion. It’s an effective treatment for scarring, irregular pigmentation, and various fine lines and wrinkles on the face, hands and other areas of the body.

Who Should Get Dermabrasion?

If you are in good health, and desire better skin texture, you may benefit from dermabrasion.

Dermabrasion can treat:

  • Acne scarring
  • Other scarring from warts, injuries, or surgeries
  • Fine lines and wrinkles, particularly those around the mouth
  • Atypical skin pigmentation

Treatment goals include smoother, healthier and more even skin. Pigmentations should be lessened for an effect that is more youthful. Dermabrasion may not be ideal for patients with darker skin because it may result in hypopigmentation (skin lightening). If you have darker skin, we may recommend an alternative treatment.

What to Expect During Your Dermabrasion

Two weeks before your procedure, you will need to apply a topical cream to prepare your skin for treatment. Local anesthetic will be administered to numb your skin. The outer layers of skin are then removed layer by layer using a dermabrader – a motorized handheld device with a diamond-shaped head. This process should last 15-30 minutes.

After Your Treatment

Your skin will be very sensitive after dermabrasion. A regimen of over-the-counter pain medication and cold compresses should be enough to minimize discomfort. An antibiotic cream will also be recommended to reduce your risk of infection.

Recovery varies among patients. Initial redness and swelling will gradually subside over the course of several weeks. Your skin will remain pink for up to three months. You may return to work and other daily routines within two weeks. After skin refinishing, remember to protect your skin from the sun for up to 12 months.

Understanding the Risks of Dermabrasion

All surgical procedures, including dermabrasion, carry a degree of risk. Some of these potential complications include bleeding, scarring, infection, irregular skin pigmentation and changes in sensitivity. These risks will be discussed in-depth during your consultation. Your surgeon will also provide you with specific instructions to promote a quick, safe recovery.

What Is Facial Waxing and Lash/Brow Tinting?

Facial waxing removes unwanted hair from the face and shapes the brows.

Tinting is great for redheads, blonds, or anyone with light eyebrows and/or eyelashes, or eyelashes that are lighter at the tips. It is liberating for the summer in particular–especially if you like to spend a lot of time in the water or at the beach!

How Long Is the Treatment and How Many Will Be Needed?

Brow waxing and tinting takes only about 15 minutes each. Since the hair grows back it will need to be redone on a regular basis to maintain the results.

Brows will need to be waxed about every four weeks to maintain a beautifully defined shape. Eyelash and brow tinting can be redone every 4 weeks, if desired, but can last up to six weeks.

Is It Painful?

Brow waxing is only momentarily uncomfortable for some, and tinting is completely painless.

What Can Be Expected Before Treatment?

Avoid Retinols one week prior to waxing.

After Treatment?

After the treatment there are no special requirements.

What is a facial and what is it used for?

Facials are deep skin treatments that hydrate, cleanse and rejuvenate the skin as well as minimize skin blemishes, dry skin, acne, and wrinkles. Facials provide ingredients to thoroughly cleanse your face and remove the top layer of dead skin cells, which results in exposing the healthy, luminous skin just below the surface. A facial involves a cleansing procedure, a massage, a steam, and a face mask. Through this relaxing process, the dead outer layer of skin cells are removed, blood circulation is stimulated, lymphatic drainage is aided, and wrinkles are delayed. Both blackheads and whiteheads are softened so they can be easily extracted. Lastly, a face mask tightens and tones the skin.

How long is each treatment? How many treatments will I need?

Facials last anywhere from thirty to seventy-five minutes depending on the treatment. Your Aesthetician can recommend how frequently you should receive facials for optimal skin care.

Are facials painful?

Not at all – facials are intended to be cleansing, soothing, and relaxing.

What can I expect before treatment?

There are no special requirements before treatment.

What can I expect after treatment?

There are no necessary steps to take after a facial. We offer over twelve different types of facials. Aestheticians at The Museum Spa and Laser Center will select a facial that is right for your individual needs.

Clinical Exfoliation

Microdermabrasion is a mild skin-resurfacing procedure that reveals smooth, glowing skin. The treatment gently exfoliates the top layers of facial skin. A mild, low-risk treatment, microdermabrasion achieves results without damaging the skin.

Who Should Get Microdermabrasion?

Patients appreciate how simple and easy a microdermabrasion can be.

We use microdermabrasion to treat:

  • Mild acne
  • Mild sun damage
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Rough skin

If you would like to improve your skin with few risks and no downtime, microdermabrasion may be right for you. Microdermabrasion is not recommended for pregnant women or people with severe acne.

What to Expect During Microdermabrasion

During microdermabrasion, you will lie down comfortably as we apply a handheld device to your skin. The device blows crystals onto the skin and then quickly removes them with suction. These tiny crystals are the key to microdermabrasion, as they improve and exfoliate your skin without causing significant damage.

If necessary, we perform multiple passes over problem areas of your skin. The amount of suction is adjusted to provide either a mild, moderate, or aggressive treatment. If you are new to microdermabrasion, or have sensitive skin, the mild suction is typically used.

After Your Treatment

Microdermabrasion treatments are often performed as a series. Once we have achieved your desired results, monthly maintenance sessions may be recommended to keep your polished new look.

Discomfort after microdermabrasion is typically short-lived. This can include redness and swelling, which should subside in a few hours. During the first week, your skin may be flaky and dry. The results of your microdermabrasion will vary based on the number of sessions and the level of your treatment.

Understanding the Risks of Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a low-risk treatment. Potential side effects include bruising caused by suction of the device and sensitivity to sun exposure. Remember to apply sunscreen, especially the first few days of your treatment. We’ll review all microdermabrasion side effects and safety information during your office visit.

Chemical Peels

Skin Renewing Facial Peels

A chemical peel is a skin-resurfacing technique that can treat a wide range of common skin conditions. Chemical peels come in varying strengths – light, medium or deep – to meet the unique needs of patients.

One of the oldest cosmetic treatments in the world, a chemical peel is an acid-based solution that can minimize lines and wrinkles caused by sun damage and aging by removing damaged outer layers of skin.

Who Should Get a Chemical Peel?

In general, fair-skinned, light-haired patients are ideal candidates for chemical peels. If you have darker skin, you may still benefit from treatment, but you will have a higher risk of uneven skin tone following your chemical peel.

A chemical peel can treat:

  • Light scarring
  • Freckles
  • Sun damage
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Fine lines
  • Enlarged pores

Your chemical peel will be custom formulated to address your specific areas of concern. After a chemical peel, your skin will look healthier, smoother, and more youthful. The final results will be determined by the number and strength of your peel(s). Chemical peels are most commonly used to treat facial regions, but they can also be used to rejuvenate other areas of the body including the chest, hands, arms, legs and neck.

What to Expect During Your Chemical Peel

Light chemical peels do not require anesthetic. For deeper peels, intravaneous sedation may be needed to minimize discomfort. Generally, your chemical peel will take about 15 minutes. Deeper peels may require more time.

Prior to your peel, a stringent cleansing solution will be applied to your face to eliminate grease or dirt from your pores. The cleansing agent may sting slightly, but this sensation will quickly pass. Next comes the actual peel. A chemical solution will be applied to the treatment area(s). You may experience a slight burning sensation as the peel is being applied. Several layers may be be applied to deepen the peel.

After about 10 minutes, the peel will be neutrilized and removed with cool water. A calming mask will then be applied to your skin for a few minutes. This will help your skin recover from the chemical peel.

After Your Treatment

Your recovery will depend on the strength of your peel. Lighter peels can lead to slight redness and peeling for a few days. Many patients liken this sensation to mild sunburn. Deeper peels will cause redness, swelling and peeling for up to two weeks. Ice packs and pain medication can be used to reduce discomfort. We will provide you with specific directions for cleansing and moisturizing during recovery.

You will need to protect your skin from direct sunlight for up to two weeks. After a light chemical peel, new skin will begin to develop in three to seven days. Deeper peels require up to two weeks. The amount of downtime required will depend on the strength of your peel. Light peels do not usually require time off from work. Deeper peels often require several days of recovery. More than one treatment may be needed to reach optimal results.

Understanding the Risks of a Chemical Peel

Some risks associated with a chemical peel may include swelling, redness, acne, uneven skin tone and discomfort. All of these risks will be discussed in-depth during your skin care consultation.
