COVID-19 – Updates and Safety Measures

COVID-19 FAQs

What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is a highly contagious novel coronavirus, which causes respiratory infections. Currently, the CDC has identified locations where travel is either not advised or should be taken with caution. The CDC provides information about current countries under restriction and can be found on the CDC site.

Preparation

Where can I send my family, friends, patients and/or guests to get the best information?
Get the latest information from trusted sources like the CDC (https://www.cdc.gov) or UNC Health (https://unchealthcare.org/coronavirus).

How are staff preparing?
Our team understands and follows our Identify, Isolate, Inform strategy. We want to ensure all of our colleagues stay safe and well.
Our Medical Receptionists are asking all patients at check in about their travel history.
Our Nursing Staff is asking every patient about any symptoms of fever, cough, shortness of breath.
If a patient identifies any of these symptoms, the Physicians and staff are using gloves and immediately wiping down all surfaces.

How should you prepare?
The best ways we can all stay healthy are to follow standard hygiene practices:
Wash your hands
Stay home and rest when sick
If you are sick and traveling for medical care or other essential reasons, be sure to carry tissues and follow good cough hygiene (cough/sneeze into your elbow). It is not necessary to use a mask unless mucus cannot be contained by a tissue.

What if someone I encounter outside of our office that has symptoms similar to COVID-19?
If you speak to or encounter someone with symptoms of COVID-19 such as fever with cough or shortness of breath, direct them to stay at home and call their primary care provider. If they are experiencing acute respiratory symptoms, they should call 911 or seek immediate treatment.

If the person traveled abroad in the 14 days prior to developing symptoms OR had direct contact with a person diagnosed with COVID-19, direct them to notify their primary care provider BEFORE coming to the clinic or Emergency Department unless they are acutely ill. In that case, calling 911 is appropriate.

In addition, North Carolina has set up a helpline at 866-462-3821, available 24/7 and staffed by nurses and pharmacists, to answer questions about COVID-19, including symptoms assessment, how to reduce the risk of transmission, and what to do if coronavirus is suspected. To submit questions online, go to http://www.ncpoisoncontrol.org and select “Chat.”

Testing

If a patient presents with a travel history and symptoms consistent with COVID-19, how do we order the test?
Currently, all COVID-19 testing is conducted at the State Lab. To arrange testing, we contact both your local Infection Prevention team and the State Health Department at 919-733-3419. The State Health Department will then arrange testing through county health departments.

For any patients who may exhibit symptoms of COVID-19 we follow our clinical strategy of ‘Identify, Isolate, Inform.’
Patients identified as under investigation for COVID-19 based on the exposure history and signs and symptoms (e.g., fever, cough) will be masked and isolated in a private room with the door closed.
Staff caring for the patients should use surgical mask or N95, eye protection, gown, and gloves.
For any patients suspected of COVID-19, staff/providers should contact the local Infection Prevention team and the State Health Department at 919-733-3419.
