Facial Implants

What is Facial Implantation?
Facial Implantation is a type of augmentation surgery that gives the appearance of a naturally fuller face.
How does the treatment work?
The surgeon makes an incision near the area of implantation, forms a pocket under the skin, inserts the implant and closes the incision with sutures.
How many treatments are required?
One session should be all that is necessary.
Is Facial Implantation surgery safe?
Yes, but with all surgeries, there are some risks. There is a small chance of infection, and the chance is slightly higher if an incision is made inside the mouth. There is a risk of the implant moving or shifting out of alignment. Also, blood clots could occur, or the body could reject the implant, resulting in necessary removal.
Are there any possible side effects?
There may be some swelling, bleeding, bruising, discomfort or itching. These side effects are temporary.
Will there be any downtime?
Yes, Facial Implants are inserted using surgery, so they require downtime. Generally you will need to rest for one or two weeks and avoid strenuous activities while you recover.
What can be expected post-surgery?
When the surgery is completed, bandages will be applied and kept on for a couple of days. There will be some tenderness and your physician will prescribe medications for pain and antibiotics to help prevent infection. After about six weeks, most of the swelling will have gone down.
How soon will results appear?
Results will appear as soon as the swelling diminishes.
How long does a Facial Implantation surgery last?
Surgery generally lasts a couple of hours.
What conditions respond best to this treatment?
Facial Implants can help those with sunken cheeks, weak chins and other problems.
Who should avoid getting Facial Implants?
Those who have a history of excessive scarring, auto-immune disorders, high blood pressure or circulatory disorders may not be good candidates.
How does the treatment feel?
You will be under general anesthesia, so you will be asleep. Any discomfort after the procedure can be controlled with pain medication.
What are the alternative treatments?
Injectables can be used to plump out certain areas of the face, but they are not permanent solutions and will not mimic the appearance of bone.
Is additional treatment necessary?
Additional treatment may be necessary should there be complications or if the implants shift.
What are the limitations of Facial Implants?
Facial Implantation surgery comes with downtime and carries some risks. For this reason, it is important to be fully informed before undergoing the procedure.
Instructions for before surgery:
The patient's individual surgeon will provide specific instructions prior to surgery. There will be guidelines on eating, drinking, smoking and medications to take and avoid. Patients should make arrangements for someone to drive them home after the surgery.
Instructions for after surgery:
Patients are required to wear bandages for the first few days, and some bruising and swelling should be expected. Pain medications are prescribed. Some numbness and soreness may last for up to three months.
