Nipple Tattooing
What is Nipple Tattooing?
Similar to decorative tattoos, it is a medical tattooing process where pigment is deposited into the middle layer of the skin to change the color of that skin. It is performed to create the appearance of an areolar complex around the nipple. It is generally performed as the final step in a breast reconstruction.
How is Nipple Tattooing performed?
It is performed in a medically supervised environment, by a registered nurse using a professional tattooing device designed for medical use. The area to be tattooed is also numbed prior to the procedure in order to minimize discomfort.
How long does the procedure last?
The procedure takes approximately 45 minutes to perform. Commonly, a touch up appointment is required due to fading of the tattoo; however, the final tattoo is permanent.
What are the possible side effects or complications?
The area to be tattooed is treated with an antibiotic ointment afterwards so the risk of infection is low. Nipple tattooing can be performed starting at approximately six weeks after nipple reconstruction. The nipple reconstruction itself can be disrupted if tattooing is performed before the reconstruction is fully healed. There is no risk to an underlying breast implant.
Is there any down time?
Similar to any tattoo, with a medical nipple tattoo, there is a healing period which lasts about five to seven days. During this period, there is a need to keep a light dressing on the tattooed area.
What are the results?
Tattooing results in a fairly natural appearing nipple-areolar complex which finalizes the appearance of completely reconstructed breast.
How does the procedure feel?
Frequently the reconstructed breast has little sensation. If sensation is present, a numbing gel or injected local anesthesia may be used to reduce any discomfort.
What are the alternative treatments?
A skin graft taken from the groin area can also be used. This area frequently has a darker pigmentation consistent with the natural areolar color.
Instructions after tattooing:
A light dressing of gauze and antibiotic ointment should be used for five to seven days after the tattooing. A patient may shower the next day
